The challenge

The Personal KinetiGraph captured detailed movement data from people living with Parkinson’s disease, but its five-page PDF report could take neurologists more than 30 minutes to interpret. Appointments rarely provided that time. The information was clinically useful, yet the presentation made it difficult to understand medication timing, dyskinesia, and treatment response with confidence.

Global Kinetics needed a report system that preserved clinical rigor while matching the speed and context of real care. It also had to work for technicians who configured each report.

My contribution

I led product design across a ten-week program with 48 participants, including practicing neurologists and the company’s clinical and engineering teams. Research focused on how clinicians actually scanned the report, where interpretation stalled, and which visual relationships supported a treatment decision.

I translated those findings into an interactive web report and supporting workflow:

  • Established a clearer visual hierarchy that surfaced patient state before supporting detail.
  • Built interactive React and D3 views for exploring medication timing, movement patterns, and treatment efficacy.
  • Designed technician configuration and clinician onboarding tools that made the redesigned report usable as a complete system.

Working closely with engineering, I designed at production fidelity rather than treating the prototype as a disposable demonstration. That made technical constraints visible throughout the process and let clinical feedback improve the same interaction model that would later ship.

The impact

The report launched at pkgcare.com in January 2021 without substantive changes to the prototype. It reduced a dense, 30-minute interpretation task to a view clinicians could assess at a glance while still allowing deeper investigation when needed.

The interaction system was also recognized as novel design work: I am named as a co-inventor on U.S. Design Patent Application 29/700,506. More importantly, the project turned objective movement data into something clinicians could use within the everyday constraints of Parkinson’s care.
